What Happened – August 9

It was on this day in 1944 that Smokey Bear first appeared on a poster. Tho this first poster was not directly related to the conflict, the advertising campaign was brought about due to two factors caused by WWII:  Not only was the Forest Service short on the manpower that was needed to fight wildfires, but the Japanese had developed a tactic of launching incendiary bomb onto coastal areas of the US in an attempt to start wildfires.  (While their goals were not successful, six hikers had been killed the previous May after discovering one of those bombs.)  Dolls of Smokey Bear were made available the same year, and he later appeared in radio broadcasts, comic books, cartoon shows, and a postage stamp. It would be ten more years before he acquired his now famous catch phrase “Remember, only you can prevent forest fires.”
