Real Names

Brenda Konkel has been talking a lot lately about the way local media allows comments on their webpages, and she is pushing for them to require users to log in with their “real name.” While I totally understand where she is coming from, I still had this to say in response to a post she made at Forward Lookout:

How do we determine if a name is considered “real” or not? ’cause the best way for me personally to be anonymous would be to post under the name my parents gave me….most, if not all, of the people I know (at work and at play) truly do call me “Penquin”

My comment is based on real-life experiences. I never hear “Saw you in the paper” from my pals and co-workers when I have a letter-to-the-editor published (in fact, a buddy once started quoting a letter he had read on the editorial page, not knowing it was written by me!), but I get all kinds of responses from pals whenever an internet comment from moi is published in the physical-newspaper. (This is my recent comment that got ink.)

Hockey to Basketball

Often times I get asked what actually goes on while I’m working. Luckily a co-worker made this time-lapse video of one of the tasks we do, ’cause some things are better shown than explained…

(If you’re looking for me personally, I’m dressed in all-black 😉 )

Write-in Walker?

WisConserve (which has been on hiatus for the past few months) was the latest blog that is urging other Republicans to write-in Scott Walker for the Democratic primary, with the hope of having him being able to avoid having to face the voters in a general election.

I had this to say in the comments:

One end you are thinking that you are satisfying your partner, your outlook on life will become buy cialis professional more positive. Erectile Dysfunction also causes a man to browse over here order viagra from india lose the erection and hardness process of male gentile organ. There has been amazing discussion about the size of cialis on line australia the penis was very significant even in the antediluvian cultures. Continue it for at least 4 months viagra 10mg to get optimum results.

A) Welcome back!

B) Slimy tactics like this are yet another reason why the state should get totally and utterly out of primary elections…let each political party find their own way to choose who should represent ’em on the ticket.

C) State law won’t allow what you want to happen (Walker vs Walker in the General election) to actually occur. But don’t let that stop ya’ll from writing him in anyways…seeing how much of his hard-core base will most likely be taking part in this write-in campaign, it’ll be interesting to see how many votes Walker does get in the DemPrimary.

Proud Member of Local 1848

Madison Politiscope, a blog hosted at the Capital Times, had a post in regards to another website (Politico) being very upset about President Obama making a speech with a local union’s flag flying behind him. Funny thing about the whole thing…it was actually the Wisconsin State flag and after the website realized their mistake they totally scrubbed it off of their page, but not before others had taken screen shots of the rant.

I tried to think of a humorous joke about “out of state agitators not even knowing what our flag looks like!” to put into the thread, but I made this comment instead:

Talking about this situation while at work today (and by talking about it, I mean “laughing”) among my co-workers, we couldn’t help but notice that Gov. Walker had been speaking on stage while the same exact flag was behind him (something I’m sure he’s done many times in the past year). Yet we never-ever heard Politico complaining about that “union flag” behind him.

So not only is Politico dumb, they are also hypocrites….

Alec does the work for ya

Caffeinated Politics has a post in regards to some proposed legislation about concussions in youth sports. There is an amendment to the proposed law that no one is claiming credit for writing, and I had this to say:

If I had to guess, I’d say the author of the amendment is named Alec. That seems to be who does most of the law-writing for the GOP in Wisconsin.

For those who are unaware, ALEC is an organization that writes proposed bills/amendments for lawmakers to introduce in Statehouses across the nation. While I can understand why some politicans may need help when it comes to actually writing out the laws, I don’t understand why such an organization isn’t required to register as a lobbying group. State Rep Mark Pocan has introduced a bill which would do exactly that.

Haters gonna hate

Althouse posted a video she and her husband had taken of a bus with two VW vans welded on top. Some of the commentators in the thread went off on the “hippie scum”…this is my response:

So

Much

Hate

🙁

Seriously, these folks ain’t hurting any of ya’ll…yet some of ya feel the need to REPEATEDLY take the time to post a message of disdain and scorn. I don’t mean to be mean, but if these folks really bother you that much then there is something very wrong with you and your life.

I think that, for some people, message threads are a form of self-therapy….for whatever reasons they feel like they can’t voice any of their disapprovals/dislikes in the “real world”, so they come online in order to let it aaaaaall out. Which is a shame…’cause all that negativity is making everything else a little less brighter.

ADDED: Looking back at the thread a few hours later, my words have been replaced with “This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.”

Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t whining about ’em deleting it…their house, their rules…but this is exactly why I decided to start copying over the comments I make elsewhere onto this page.

Smells like penguins

It seems that penguins in Saudi Arabia (you didn’t know there are penguins in the Middle East? Don’t be silly…there are penguins anywhere there is a Sea World!) are really fond of how lavender smells. So fond, in fact, that it is often exchanged as a gift….

A diamond may be a girl’s best friend, but in the African penguin world the females have far simpler tastes. They’re extremely partial to sprigs of a plant found in many SA gardens: lavender.

Well, that’s certainly the case at uShaka Sea World in Durban. And the plant is not coveted for its oils or culinary qualities, but rather as part of the birds’ wooing ritual.

Male penguins present their feathered partners with sprigs of lavender, supplied by Sea World staff, as material with which to build their nests.

Delta Angie

I’m a sucker for ballads…there is something about a story and song where the sum of the parts is truly greater than each standing alone. Here are a couple stories sung by Helen Reddy:
