What Happened – December 29

The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “1170 – Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, is assassinated inside Canterbury Cathedral by followers of King Henry II; he subsequently becomes a saint and martyr in the Anglican Church and the Roman Catholic Church” and the most recent is “2003 – The last known speaker of Akkala Sami dies, rendering the language extinct.

A couple other things that also took place on this day are:

1890 – US troops kill over 150 Indians at Wounded Knee. The 7th Calvary had been sent to the reservation in order to stop the tribes from performing the “Ghost Dance”, a religious ceremony that the Plains Indians believed would result in a re-birth of the Earth.

1970 – President Nixon signs the Occupational Safety and Health Act into law.

Happy birthday to Andy Wachowski, Paula Poundstone, Jon Polito, Ted Danson, Ray Thomas, and Mary Tyler Moore.
