What Happened – July 24

It was on this day in 2008 that the US minimum wage was increased to $6.55 per hour, and also on this day in 2009 that it was raised to $7.25 an hour. The federal minimum wage was first established in 1938 at the rate of 25 cents per hour. It has not been raised since 2009.

The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “1132 – Battle of Nocera between Ranulf II of Alife and Roger II of Sicily” and the most recent is “2010 – Over 80,000 people from around the world record their daily lives for submission to the YouTube documentary Life In A Day.

A few other things that also took place on this day are:

1487 – Workers in the Netherlands engage in a general strike to protest a ban on foreign beer.

1866 –Tennessee becomes the first former Confederate State to be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War.

1969 – The first manned mission to the moon ends safely with a splash down in the Pacific Ocean.
