What Happened – June 28

It was on this day that The War To End All Wars both started and ended. The Archduke of Austria and his wife were assassinated on the 28th of June in 1914. Due to various treaties and tempers of the time, this directly resulted in what is now known as World War One. The Great War would be waged until this day in 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.

The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “1098 – Fighters of the First Crusade defeat Kerbogha of Mosul” and the most recent is “2006 – The Republic of Montenegro is admitted as the 192nd Member of the United Nations by General Assembly.

A few other events that also took place on this day are:

1838 – Victoria is crowned Queen of England.

1846 – Adolphe Sax receives patents for 14 different variations of his new musical instrument, the saxophone.

1997 – During the 3rd round of a boxing match, Mike Tyson bites off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear.

Happy birthday to John Cusack, John Elway, Kathy Bates, David Knights, Leon Panetta, and Mel Brooks.
