What Happened – December 11

It was on this day in 1968 that the Rolling Stones put on a rock and roll circus. The event was filmed before an invited audience on a stage designed to look like a circus big top. Other musical acts included The Who, Jethro Tull, Marianne Faithfull, Taj Mahal, and a “supergroup” made up of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell, and Yoko Ono. Even tho the show started in the early afternoon, delays and equipment malfunctions resulted in the Stones not performing their set until 5am the next morning. Originally intended to be broadcast on BBC, the band decided to not do so due to their lack-luster performance. Some of the footage was later used in a documentary about The Who, and an album & video of most of the show was released in 1996.

A ballerina on Solsbury Hill

Two songs that has the word “pirouettes” in the lyrics? I dunno why, it just happens that way sometimes.

(Yes, I know that it is kind of a cop-out to post a video of something that shows nothing…but I “heart* that song from Buffy and can’t find a decent live version of it anywhere. Hopefully Peter riding a bicycle on stage makes up for the lack of visual stimulation on the other video.)

What Happened – December 7

It was on this day in 1963 that first authorized* use of instant replay was used during a live sports television broadcast. The Army-Navy football game was being televised on CBS, and the director had built a machine (which weighed over 1/2 a ton) in order to re-broadcast captured footage. However, it experienced several technical difficulties and was only used on one play, a touchdown by Army which was re-shown at the original speed. (With the announcer emphasizing that the team did not score again.) It would be another four years before a machine capable of doing a “freeze-frame” would start to be used in the broadcast booths.
