What Happened – October 11

It was on this day in 1975 that NBC first broadcast Saturday Night.  Later re-named Saturday Night Live, this debut episode was broadcast live and was hosted by George Carlin. The first sketch featured John Belushi and Andy Kaufman, Albert Brooks had a pre-recorded film, Chevy Chase did the Weekend Update, and Jim Henson’s Muppets made an appearance. Billy Preston & Janis Ian were the musical guests, with each artist performing two songs.

 

The earliest event that Wiki takes note of occurring on this day is “1138 – A massive earthquake struck Aleppo, Syria” and the most recent is “2002 – A bomb attack in a shopping mall in Vantaa, Finland kills seven.

 

A couple other things that also happened on this day are:

1976 – President Ford posthumously promotes George Washington to General of the Armies of the United States.

1984 – While on board the Space Shuttle Challenger, Kathryn Sullivan becomes the first American woman to walk in space.
