What Happened – August 18

It was on this day in 1587 that Ellinor Dare gave birth to a girl in what is now South Carolina. At the time, it was called the Roanoke Colony and the infant was the first English child to be born in the Americas. Sir Walter Raleigh had originally founded the colony two years earlier, but the first attempt faltered and everyone returned to England. John White (father of Ellinor) led the second wave of pioneers (about 100 men&women) and then set sail back to home for more supplies.

It was also on this same day, but in 1590, that White returned from England and found the entire settlement deserted. Houses and other buildings had been carefully dismantled, indicating that the departure wasn’t done in haste. The only clue to their where-a-bouts was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. It could have referred to either a nearby island or a neighboring Indian tribe. Whatever it was, the Lost Colony was never heard from again and experts are unsure of exactly what their fate was.

The first thing that Wiki takes note of happening on this day is “1201 – The city of Riga is founded” and the most recent is “2008 – President Of Pakistan Pervez Musharaf resigns due to pressure from opposition.
