1965 – A white cop arrests a black drunk driver in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.  His brother asks to drive the car away, but the officer radios for it to be impounded. The brother and the mother are both arrested after a heated exchange with the police. A crowd of about a hundred or so (who had been observing the situation) begin attacking the police with rocks, beginning what would become four days of large-scale rioting. 34 people are killed, over 1,000 injured, and almost 3,500 arrested. About 1,000 building would be destroyed or severely damaged in the mayhem, which ended only after National Guard troops moved into the city and martial law was declared.

1992 – The Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the US, opens in Bloomington, MN.
