Estimated to have been built around 150 BC, the device was first thought to be a clock. But upon further research it was discovered that it can be used to calculate the position of the Sun, Moon, Mars, and Venus, as well as the phases and eclipses of various heavenly bodies. It also takes into account for “leap years”, something that wouldn’t be on calendars about until 46 BC. Archeologist disagree about what the machine’s exact purpose actually was, with some claiming it was used as an aid for navigation and others saying was used to schedule holidays and special events like the Ancient Olympics.
