It was on this day in 1957 that President Eisenhower sent troops from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock, Arkansas in order to enforce desegregation in the public schools. Segregated schools had been declared illegal the year before, but when nine black students registered at an all-white public school the governor of Arkansas deployed National Guard troops to prevent them from attending. The mayor of Little Rock asked the federal government to intervene, and the President nationalized the National Guard (thus taking command away from the Governor) in addition to sending in over 1,200 federal soldiers. The students were then admitted into the High School under armed guard.
