The grandchild of one of the accused (as well as niece to another) was the main witness against them, testifying that she saw them turn themselves into dogs and attend orgies in the woods with dark creatures that were “not like men in the face.” Three other men also testified against the women, saying they saw spells being cast and curses being chanted. Right before the judge was to rule the young girl broke down into tears and admitted she was coached by the men into lying, and none of what she said was true. The judge then found the accused to be not guilty of the charges and they were freed.
It was also on this day, but in 1692, that five people in Salem MA were hanged after having been found guilty of practicing witchcraft.
