The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “475 – Byzantine Emperor Zeno is forced to flee his capital at Constantinople, and his general, Basiliscus gains control of the empire” and the most recent is “2005 – Elections are held to replace Yasser Arafat as head of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He is succeeded by Rawhi Fattouh.

A few other things that also took place on this day are:

1493 – Columbus records in his ship’s log the sighting of three mermaids.

 1956 – First “Dear Abby” column appears in a newspaper.

1959 – First episode of  “Rawhide” is broadcast on TV.
