The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “307 – Jin Huidi, Chinese Emperor of the Jin Dynasty, is poisoned and succeeded by his son Jin Huaidi” and the most recent is “2011 – An attempted assassination of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and subsequent shooting in Casas Adobes, Arizona at a Safeway grocery store kills 6 people and wounds 13, including Giffords.

A few other things that also took place on this day are:

1815 –  General Andrew Jackson defeats the British during the Battle of New Orleans.

1835 – For the first (and so far, only) time, the US national debt is zero.

1941 – William Randolph Hearst forbids his newspapers across the country from accepting any advertisement for the movie Citizen Kane.
