The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “563 – The Byzantine church Hagia Sophia in Constantinople is dedicated for the second time after being destroyed by earthquakes” and the most recent is “2008 – Lord’s Resistance Army, a Ugandan rebel group, begins a series of attacks on Democratic Republic of the Congo, massacring more than 400.

A few other things that also occurred on this day are:

1826 – Over 70 cadets at West Point riot after getting drunk on eggnog.

1851 – Library of Congress catches on fire; over 35,000 books are destroyed.

1968 – Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders orbit the Moon, the first humans to do so.

1992 – Pres Bush issues pardons to six of his advisers involved with the Iran-Contra scandal.
