What Happened – November 9

It was on this day in 1938 that the Night of the Broken Glass took place in Germany and Austria. The day before a German diplomat had been murdered by a Jewish refugee, and the Nazis used that as an excuse to start rounding up all the Jews living in Nazi Germany. The minister of propaganda for the Nazis sent telegrams across the country, ordering his stormtroopers to start destroying Jewish-owned property and for the local police to allow them to do so. In the course of the next two days over 1,600 synagogues were attacked with sledge hammers and burnt with torches, and at least 7,500 shops and businesses looted. 91 Jewish people were killed and over 30,000 arrested. (Over 2,000 of those arrested later died in the concentration camps.) A few days afterwards Hermann Goring (one of the top Nazis) stated “The Jewish problem will reach its solution if, in any time soon, we will be drawn into war beyond our border—then it is obvious that we will have to manage a final account with the Jews.
