What Happened – November 18

It was on this day in 1978 that 918 people in Jonestown Guyana died during a mass suicide/murder. Led by Jim Jones, members of the Peoples Temple (a church he had formed years earlier) had left California in 1974 in order to create their own community. Congressman Leo Ryan (with about a dozen staffers) paid a visit to the compound on 11/17/78 in order to check on the welfare of the people, and several members told him that they wished to return to America. However, the group was ambushed when they attempted to board their plane the next day and five people were killed. That night Jim Jones instructed his assistants to prepare Kool-Aid with cyanide in it, and the cult (including over 290 children) used it to kill themselves. At least eight people at Jonestown survived; three had been sent away on an errand and five others (including a five-year old boy) hid while the rest of the group were lining up to drink the poison.
