What Happened – November 16

It was on this day in 1945 that over 80 Nazi scientists and engineers arrived in New York City. These men were part of “Operation Paperclip”, a program that was set up to bring rocket and explosive experts in occupied Germany to the United States. President Truman had authorized the original plan to tap into the enemy’s talent, but with the condition that no actual Nazis be allowed to participate. As a result, the Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the CIA) forged documents in order to “clean up” the background of many men, thus allowing the former Nazis (some of whom had earlier been offically labeled as a “menace to the security of the Allied Forces”, and at least one person who had conducted experiments on prisoners in the concentration camps) to emigrate into America under this program.
