What Happened – October 21

It was on this day in 1797 that the USS Constitution was finally launched by the US Navy into Boston Harbor. (An earlier attempt, the month before, resulted in the ship being stuck before hitting water.) The 44-gun frigate was first used to escort merchant ships on the eastern seaboard, and then sailed to the Mediterranean to fight pirates there. A peace treaty with Tripoli was signed on her decks in 1805 and the ship returned home. It was during the War of 1812 that she earned the nickname “Old Ironsides” after British sailors said they saw cannon balls bouncing off the frigate. Scheduled to be scrapped in 1830, she was instead re-fitted due to a public outcry. During the Civil War the Constitution was re-fitted as a training vessel and used to house cadets at the Naval Academy. The ship is currently the oldest floating commissioned naval vessel in the world, and last sailed under her own power in 1997.

The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “1096 – People’s Crusade: The Turkish army annihilates the People’s Army of the West” and the most recent is “2003 – Images of the dwarf planet Eris are taken and subsequently used in documenting its discovery by the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David L. Rabinowitz.
