What Happened – October 13

It was on this day in 1975 that singer Charlie Rich, while presenting the award for Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year, burned the envelope that held the name. John Denver was the winner and Rich seemed to be upset about the pop-artist achieving that title. (He later claimed he was “over-medicated.”) Denver was appearing via satellite TV and wasn’t aware of what had occurred on stage when he gave his acceptance speech. Charlie Rich (who had won five different awards in the past two years, including “Entertainer of the Year” in 1974) was blacklisted from the CMA, and never won another award from them again.
