It was on this day in 1987 that two men in central Brazil stole some lab equipment from an abandoned hospital. Intending to sell it for scrap they proceeded to dismantle the unit, not aware that it contained radioactive materials. Over the next two days the men starting having constant dizziness, along with vomiting & diarrhea. After the (non-abandoned) medical clinic told them that it was a result of a food allergy, they continued to tear the machine down and sold the parts to a local junkyard operator. The owner of the yard, Devair Alves Ferreira, was intrigued by how some of the dust had a blue glow to it. He brought the dust into his house, intending to make a ring for his wife as well as allow visitors to the home (and his six year old daughter) to play with the strange stuff. Some of the radioactive dust was also spread throughout nearby neighborhoods. About two weeks after the device was first dismantled, Mrs. Ferreira became suspicious of how ill everyone around her was getting and took a sample to the authorities for testing. Four people ended up dying from radiation poisoning, one of the men who first took the machine had to have his arm amputated, and almost 250 people were contaminated…with 20 of them requiring treatment.
