It was on this day in 1897 that a sheriff’s posse in Luzerne County, PA opened fire on 300 unarmed striking miners, killing 19 and wounding many. The workers were marching to Lattimer to meet up with other miners who had recently formed a union. Tensions were high, as over 8,000 miners in the area were currently on strike in protest against unsafe work conditions & unfair company policies. Later that night members of the state militia entered the town, with the Sheriff and 70 of his deputies being arrested.
