It was on this day in 1982 that Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’  opened in NYC in only one theater. First seen at the Cannes Film Festival earlier that year, it had the official premiere in London. Tho very well-received at the earlier showings, the studio decided to do a very limited release in order to gauge how audiences would react to the unusual movie. It came in at #28 of all US box office receipts, and was expanded to over 600 theaters at the beginning of September. It quickly jumped to #3 in box office receipts, with E.T. and An Officer and a Gentleman ahead of it. The movie also won two British Academy Awards: Best Sound and Best Original Song (for “Another Brick in the Wall”)
