What Happened – August 25

It was on this day in 1970 that Jimi Hendrix had a opening party at his new recording studio. Originally the guitarist and his manager had bought the place in Greenwich Village with the intentions of having a nightclub, but when his accountant told him how much he had spent on his last recording project Hendrix decided to create Electric Lady Studios instead.  With a 32-track mixing board and “the best equipment in the world”, Jimi truly did feel at home in the space which also featured round windows and painted murals. However he was only able to record for about 3-4 weeks in the new studio, most of which was during the last phase of construction. The day after this premiere gala he boarded a plane for England to play a festival, and Jimi Hendrix would be found dead in his girlfriend’s London apartment less than two weeks later. The studio is still open to this day.
