What Happened – August 16

It was on this day in 1896 that Skookum Jim, Kate Carmack, and George Carmack discovered gold near the Klondike River in Yukon Canada. As word spread of the find, people from all over the world came into Alaskan ports in order to try their own luck at getting rich. Over 100,000 people attempted the journey over the next couple years, but only about 40,000 made it all the way to the area where the gold actually was. (The rest either turned back or set up stores & businesses in towns along the way.) Of those who complete the journey, about 4,000 managed to find enough of the shiny metal to make it worthwhile. By 1899 the gold rush was over, but the legacy lived on in novels, radio&TV shows, and movies.
