What Happened – August 15

It was on this day in 1977 that Jerry Ehman noticed a radio signal that came from deep space. He was working as part of a project that was searching for extraterrestrial intelligence and was going over data from a radio telescope at Ohio State University. For the technical details of what occurred click here, but basically there was a 37-second radio transmission on a narrow bandwidth that came from outside our solar system. This phenomena was so unusual that Ehman scribbled “Wow!” next to the numbers/letters that measured the signal. The radio signal has not been heard from since.

 

The earliest event that Wiki says happened on this day is “778 – The Battle of Roncevaux Pass, at which Roland is killed” and the latest is “2007 – An 8.0-magnitude earthquake off the Pacific coast devastates Ica and various regions of Peru killing 514 and injuring 1,090.
