It was on this day in 1904 that Charles Menches ran out of dishes while selling ice cream at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, MO. Eager to keep the tasty treats available to his customers he bought up a bunch of wafer pastries from a fellow vendor, twisted them into a cone shape and then topped it off with his ice cream…thus inventing the ice cream cone.
