What Happened – June 5

It was on this day in 1989 that a man stood up to some Chinese tanks.

There had been protests (mostly from students seeking economic reforms, but some people wanting democracy) in Tiananmen Square since the middle of April. The Chinese Gov’t declared martial law on May 20, but didn’t attempt a serious crack-down until the beginning of June. As the Army entered Beijing the people blocked the streets, with some throwing Molotov Cocktails at the tanks. The Chinese Army responded by firing back, and continued on towards their objective. (It is unknown how many citizens were killed or wounded…estimates range from several hundred killed to a few thousand.)  Tiananmen Square was cleared of all protesters by the early morning of June 4. It was the next day that the unnamed man had a brief stand-off with a column of tanks in the Square, and the picture of it would come to symbolize the event. It is not known what happened to him afterwards…some think he was arrested and executed, while others claim he went into hiding and is now living in Taiwan. Thanks to strict censorship policies, most young adults living in China have never seen the famous photo, nor are they even aware of what led up to it.
