What Happened – June 11

It was on this day in 1963 that the governor of Alabama stood in the doorway at the University of Alabama in order to prevent two black students from registering at the school. The local National Guard was nationalized later that same day (which placed them under the control of the President rather than the Governor) and those troops then escorted Vivian Jones and James Hood back to the school, at which time George Wallace then stepped aside. A little over a decade later the Governor claimed to be “born again”, and stated “I was wrong. Those days are over and they ought to be over” in regards to those actions.
